Vacuum Plasma Treatment for Silicone O Rings

Silicone o-rings can benefit from vacuum plasma treatment to increase their adherence and further coat them with PTFE. Silicone is a strong, flexible elastomer with great chemical and high temperature resistance. Nevertheless, silicone's low surface energy, like that of PTFE, can make it challenging to attach to some substrates. Plasma must be used to coat the silicone o-ring with PTFE in order for the coating to hold up during dynamic application and testing.

In order to establish a strong, long-lasting coated bond in the industry, the surface needs to be etched for bonding applications. In order to boost the surface energy of silicone to a level high enough to coat it with PTFE, a CF4+O2 gas mixture must be used. Normal ambient air or argon are sufficient for general applications when the silicone surface energy needs just to be raised.

Vacuum plasma treatment is often used in industrial applications to improve the adhesion of silicone O rings in applications such as medical devices, automotive, and aerospace.
