The metal is put in a vacuum chamber while a gas is added during vacuum plasma processing. An electrical discharge is then used to ionise the gas, resulting in a plasma that reacts with the metal surface. The gas generally used for increasing surface energy is Argon or mixture of Argon and Oxygen. The surface alterations that can result from this reaction include cleaning, etching, and the deposition of thin coatings.
